When classes are getting me down, when I question my path, when I lose the reasons under the stress of college, I look at this picture. And I remember why I’m becoming a Vet Tech.

Think of all the beauty in your life today. Relationships, nature, passion, food, strength, knowledge, sadness, kindness… Everything in life has beauty. Make today the day in which you recognize the beauty hidden in your life. When you notice beauty in another person, be sure to tell him. Beauty is mentioned far too little. The way the Sun lights up the sky and warms the Earth after the Moon has done its best to cool it down. The way your dog cuddles up to you on the couch after a long day to comfort you. Apples hanging off the trees in clumps, begging to be plucked and made into pie. There is beauty everywhere, you just have to open your eyes and let it be seen.

When the vast majority thinks of getting a new dog, they think of getting a cute little puppy. Full of life and mischief and fun for the kids to play with. But what about those dogs in the shelters who will never know the feeling of being played with by kids? That will never feel the warmth of a cozy bed, the quietness of a home, the beauty of a relationship with a human? A dog is man’s best friend… but it goes the other way, too. Dogs need companionship to live healthy and happy lives. Those are the dogs who should be brought home. The puppies at the shelter will have no problem getting adopted- don’t worry about them! Think of all the dogs euthanized every day in shelters because there was simply no room left for them. Oddly enough, euthanasia means “good death”. However, if an animal has never been able to live, just how good is it? Think about it when you plan to adopt a new pet into your life.

Leave. Just go. Find somewhere beautiful, somewhere unique, somewhere you can be content. We are the lucky species which has the power to explore every part of the world… Why not take advantage of this? If you’re feeling like you don’t belong where you are right now, leave. Don’t let a moment of your life pass by without searching for happiness because soon enough, life is over and you haven’t found the one place your mind is at ease. So do it- go.

Here’s Gus, my crazy Pitbull-mix.  He’s one of a kind, out of control, and the best beggar in the world.  He pees all over the place and drops his Nylabone on my toes every once in a while, but I love him to death!  Gussy has brought more joy to my life than any dog I’ve ever met, and I am very thankful for that.  When he runs to greet me at the front door after weeks of being away at college, there is no greater feeling.  When he falls asleep with his head in my lap, I know that he feels just as close to me as I do to him.  He’s the best!
